Pet Tails

Your Fabulous Stories

Pet Tails are stories and experiences from your Animal Welfare League

It was just before Christmas this winter.  The sky was already dark outside when the bedraggled piece of skin and bones was brought to our shelter.  The little black and white Boston Terrier was continuously shaking and trembling.  She was cold, wet and very very hungry.  Her coat literally hung on the small frail frame of her almost lifeless body.  We immediately began lifesaving procedures.  We wrapped her in warm towels and held her while we fed her small amounts of food.  She started weakly responding to our efforts.  Next we scanned her to see if a microchip would be in place.  We were surprised to not only find who her owner was, but also that she had been reported to us as lost over 4 months ago!  She had been missing all this time.

Her little face was lacerated with scratches, her bony ribs protruded through her thin skin, and she was a very frightened and sick little dog.  There would have been no recognition of her by using only the photograph we'd been given when she was originally lost.  Had it not been for the microchip we would never have found the owner.  But we did find the owner, Alena and were so relieved when she answered our call.    We talked with Alena, and told her to be prepared at the poor condition of the dog.  We stayed until 8:30 that night until Elena could get off work to come and get her dog.  We scheduled an immediate appointment for a vet the next morning and told Elena how to care for the dog overnight.

Nikki, under the care of Alena's vet, recovered quickly and unbelievably well.  But, like Paul Harvey says, "now for the rest of the story"  The best part of this pet "tale" is about Elena's small son, Keith.

It happened that shortly before Nikki was found, Keith had been able to have a conversation with Santa Claus.  "What do you want for Christmas?" Santa asked Keith.

The youngster bravely told Santa,  "I don't want anything else for Christmas except for my dog Nikki to come home!"

Sometimes small miracles do happen, even today in this cynical world, and little boys with the help of your Animal Welfare League, get their Christmas wishes.

Jack

"We adopted Jack from your shelter in June 2007. Jack has brought more love and happiness to our home than we would have ever expected. He came home fully potty trained, well-behaved and ready to love us. We can not believe his old family brought him in to you, but we are so thankful that AWL decided to keep him for a month before we found him. Jack now sleeps on an orthopedic bed at night and on his brand new lazy-boy by day. He has his own membership to the county parks and visits them daily. Jack is spoiled with a daily rawhide chew and new toys weekly. We will be coming from Ft Wayne, back to AWL to bring donations on behalf of us and Jack for the care you gave him."

Much appreciation,
Rick, Dawn, and Jack

Niki

"We adopted Niki, formerly Charmisa, last Christmas. My husband and I had talked about finding a playmate for our German Shepherd, Fritz. My husband had always wanted a Siberian Husky, too. I went on the AWL website just to take a look, and there was Niki. She was so cute! At the shelter, they took her out of her kennel and put her in the visiting room so I could get to know her. I knew the second I looked at her and she looked at me, that she was coming home with me."

"Niki had already been house-broken, and learned commands quickly. She was quick to adapt to her new home, and was so affectionate! Niki and Fritz get along great, and they love to play together. I can't imagine why anyone would want to abandon her, but I'm glad we could give her a new home!"

Maggie

"I adopted Maggie (formerly Fluffball) from the shelter in April. As you can see from her pictures, she's now a very different dog! I visited the shelter after work one evening with the intention of walking dogs on a beautiful spring evening but instead found a dog that was so scared and dirty looking I couldn't ignore her. I offered to have her groomed the next day to better her chance of being adopted, but when she clung to me and didn't want to leave my sight after her appointment, I decided she'd "picked" me as her new caregiver and I decided to adopt her."

She's been an absolute delight...house-broken, knows commands, fetches her ball  and the list goes on. Not sure how such a wonderful dog had the misfortune of becoming a homeless stray in very bad condition when animal control found her, but I'm very blessed to have her. She's perfect for us and is a very happy addition to our family."

"Thank you AWL for doing what you do, and bringing my Maggie and me together!" ~Kim LeBarron
